Even on a high mountain, there should be a path for people to climb up
And even in a dangerous road, there should be a way out

As glue is made of water only
It is talented for a man to set up his career with his bare hands

The higher a tree grows, the harder the wind blows it

And nobleness never comes to daily drunkards

Good appetite and sound sleeps make people become fairies
Whereas bad appetite and unsound sleeps not only take people’s money away but also bring worries to them

Gold is tested by coal and flames

Both likes eating on sly and beating her children a day long

It’s better to have a good wood than a good paint coat
And it’s better to have a woman of ugly appearance but good conduct than a woman of fine appearance but bad conduct

A good wine doesn’t find fault with a glazed terra-cotta jar
And a torn coat with a good patch is better than a badly sewn new coat

Man’s wisdom is as shallow as a deep well
While woman’s wisdom is as deep as a betel tray

Only staying up late can people know that the night is long
And only residing long in a place can people know who are kind-hearted

Flies will die at once with sweet honey
Whereas places of bitterness are honest ones

There are no musical instruments to play music for buffaloes
There are no bullets to shoot sparrows and no swords to chop flies

Get lots of hardship but gain nothing from the work

When I swim across the river with some gold in the hand
I don’t grieve over the missing gold but the toil of taking the gold

From now on, I must wear a ring of thread on my wrist
To remember to shoot sitting birds, not flying ones !

For the catalpa is so light that it can float on water whereas the canary-wood is so heavy that it can’t !

When one is happy, only the landscape can make him happy
But when one is sad, even the flute and clarinet’s sounds can’t kill his sadness away
Khi vui non nước cũng vui
Khi buồn sáo thổi, kèn đôi cũng buồn
Even Heaven sometimes pours sunshine and sometimes pours rains
And the day sometimes breaks early sometimes breaks late much less human beings
Trời còn khi nắng khi mưa
Ngày còn khi sớm khi trưa, nữa người
For a long time, people always think that
Their own talent of literature is better than others’ but others’ wives are more beautiful than theirs
Xưa nay thế thái nhân tình
Vợ người thì đẹp, văn mình thì hay
When people love somebody, they’ll overpraise him
But when people hate somebody, they’ll slant the facts of him

The more it rains, the better the riceplants by the road

The more often people meet one another, the more they disregard one another

The more gorgeous a flower is, the faster it fades
While fragrance which is as faint as jasmine can last long

Whereas the fish outside the fish-pot tries to get in

In the fish-pot, the fish swims up and down to get out but
all fails
Seeing its swimming, the fish outside the fish-pot misunderstands that it is happy with the life in there
Tung tăng như cá trong lờ
Trong không ra được, ngoài ngờ là vui
Oh, the coin has no powder and lipstick
But it can adorn the human face artfully
Đồng tiền không phấn không hồ
Mà sao khéo điểm khéo tô mặt người
Oh, fellow ! Come to warn the fisherman that
Whenever a fish bites his bait, he should pull his fishing rod up or the fish will bite it off

People are still foolish, not wise at all
For they are in rags when alive but in new clothes at death

Though other people are all angling loaches and turtles
Hãy cho bền chí câu cua
Dù ai câu chạch câu rùa mặc ai.
Well, I have made a firm determination now
And I’ll never change it though someone may urge me vigorously and urgently

To have a well-read child, one should respect its teacher

The friendship is a relation of mutual understanding
So people should treat one another consistently before and later

In life, people should rely on one another
As the banian tree relies on the banian tree’s god and the banian tree’s god relies on the banian tree

If a man respects others, others will respect him

Those who are as red but non-fragrant as hibiscus flowers

In riches, if one doesn’t give a financial support to anyone
When in misfortune, nobody will give him a financial support at all
Khi giàu chẳng có đỡ ai
Đến khi hoạn nạn chẳng ai đỡ mình
One should neither be too generous nor too parsimonious
For people will laugh at his over-generosity and criticize his parsimony
Ở sao cho vừa lòng người
Ở rộng người cười, ở hẹp người chê
One should pay ten when borrowing nine
So that he can borrow others again in case of need
Vay chín thì trả cả mười
Phòng khi túng nhỡ có người cho vay
One should criticize others one but criticize himself ten
For he is the first to behave himself badly and the others are just the second
Trách người một, trách ta mười
Bởi ta bạc trước cho người tệ sau
It is easy to come in and go out of a poor man’s house
But it is very difficult to enter a rich man’s due to many doors of it
Nghèo thì dễ ở dễ ăn
Giàu thì cửa ngáng, cửa ngăn khó vào
I am not greedy for others’ riches
But I just try to earn a good living in my poverty
Giàu người, ta chẳng có ham
Khó thì ta liệu ta làm ta ăn
It is better to have only vegetables in the meal
Than to have meat or fish with blames and curses
Thà rằng ăn bát cơm rau
Còn hơn thịt cá nói nhau nặng lời
There is a vine only when there is a tree
And there are purlins only when there are columns and trusses
