Vedavayasa the
great scholar & sage taught Sumanta,Jaimini,Paila,& his son Sukdev the
four Vedas as well as the
Mahabharata. The Mahabharata is deemed to be the fifth Veda. Thus the
Mahabharata dwells on how it was first published. We have told how Vedavyasa
was born & how the Mahabharata was published.
The great & famous Bhisma was born as a son
of king Santanu. Earlier he was a god & one of the Astavasus who live in
heaven.
Now we must
remember the great saint Animandavya. He was accused of theft though he was
innocent. Consequently he was wounded by a lance. The sage Animandavya recalled
how once in his childhood he had injured a fly. There after Animandavya spent
the spent his life in penance. Despite that his sin that he had committed in
childhood was not outdone by penance. So he cursed Dharmaraja or the god who catered
justice namely Yama. Because of his curse the god of justice Yama would be born
in a womb of a sudra woman. Consequently the god of justice & virtue reincarnated
as Vidura who was wise & virtuous, born of a sudra woman.
Thus the
Mahabharata now dwells on the background of the birth of the major dramatis
personae of the main action of the Mahabharata.
Karna of great
might was born of the Sun god & daughter of Kuntibhoja. He was born with
natural armour & ear – rings. His was a charmed body.
Narayana is the god
of gods. The three worlds worship him. He incarnated as the son of Vasudeva
& Devaki.
Narayana has
neither birth nor death. To be born in human shape was a sport with him. He is
the all in all & the controller of the existence. He is subtle. He does not
act. He is large than even the largest thing in the existence. He is the
essence of the three gunas & Prakriti. There by he is the constituent of the
existence itself.
The great sages call
him by the name Jeevatma. He is deathless. He is changeless. He is the cause of
everything whatever. His impact is everywhere. He is the Purusa that fills up
everything. He is the detached witness of every action. He is the only protagonist.
He is the point where the discrete vital forces commingle with the all-pervasive
life. He is the primordial sound or Pranava. He is boundless. He is the god of
gods or the brightest in the existence. He is self & non self in one or the
duck. He takes shelter in the water & hence he is Narayana. He holds the
world. He is the finest of everything whatever. He is always free. His qualities
are infinite & he has no quality. He pervades everything. He has no
creator. He is omnipotent. He is the father of fathers of all living beings. And he was
born in the race of Vrisni to rescue virtue in a decadent world.
The mighty Satyaki
& Kritavarma who were skilled in the use of weapons were born of Satyaka
& Hridik. They were devoted followers of Shree Krishna or Narayana in human
shape.
