những chương trình khoe nhà đẹp của các đại gia có giá hàng chục hàng trăm tỉ nội tệ;

25. NONSENSE

In life many matters and events seriously and solemnly performed
at the national and international levels
attracting lots of concerns from the press, the media and the public
with titanic investments
are really matters of nonsense
even sins.

The programs of searching talents for the costly  fashion industry noisily publicized on newspapers and television,
the programs of showing long legs with supernatural dance treads,
the programs of showing rich people’s beautiful vilas at the prices of dozens of billion or hundreds of billion national piasters;
the articles talking about the price of this superstar’s dress or the reason why that miss of beauty had to stay outside overnight
while the prices are galloping like horses out of reins making housewives be in great fear as if they were stolen after each time of going shopping,
the students not able to get any occupation after their graduation are being so worried that their faces turn distorted,
and the economy is being in the impetus downward on a slope without brake together with lots of bankrupt general companies and corporations...

A noisy inspection tour headed by the minister of education to a mountainous primary school.
The pupil quantity of the whole school is just over ten little children gathering in a house of the thatch roof and the walls made of bamboo wattle plastered with mud peeled off after some stormy seasons without repair looking not as good as a common peasant
household’s buffalo shed.
At meals, every pupil has to make a cooking by themselves without meat, fish but some vegetables picked off in the forest like a gang of beggars.
The minister smilingly offered them some pens and notebooks, praised their hardship overcoming spirit in the television reporters’ lens  and then went off in his car.

A visit from the minister of Health accompanied by many officials in the medical branch to a central-route hospital.
Looking at the scene of two or three patients sharing the same bed
Even some patients had to lie on the floor in a muggy and stuffy atmosphere,
The minister attentively encouraged the patients to have peace of mind in the medical treatment and wished them an early recovery from illness,
And then he passionately made a speech on the brilliant prospect of the national medical branch in the future and then got in his car in the hospital staff’s passionate farewell.

.
The Writers’ Association opening solemn conferences and seminars at high and low levels to discuss about the supernaturalness in poet A’s works and the delirium syndrome in writer B’s creation.
The poets and wrriters ardently polemizing for many days in the literary circle on this school and that trend,
Writing poems and stories on sublime things in the high sky,
haughty in the art ivory tower without the earthly world’s smoke and fire like the gods and goddesses on mountain Olympia.
while, in their country, millions of miserable people are selling their faces to the ground and their backs to the sky but not able to earn enough daily bread for their stomaches,
and thousands of people are living unstably on street ends and in
market corners in a beggar’s life.
The army of umemployed people are as crowded as the Tartar army in the past
and the bribes and corruptions are doing whatever they like as an epidemic...

All and all of those facts
are really acts of nonsense
even sins.

Poems by Mai Van

Mai Văn Phấn
Translated from Vietnamese by Nhat-Lang Le
Edited by Susan Blanshard

Spreads everywhere
It’s time
For me to go home

I drink my cup of water
Yet do not know the name of the bird
That just flew away

Lands upon
The sunlight
The garden full of thorns

Gets lost and flies into my room
I turn out the lights
Still it’s bright outside

In spring
Bathe
Even in places without water

Perching on the wires
Looking from afar
Like knots

A bee flies across my door
Changing its socks quickly
And hits the road again

Short calls
Switching branches constantly
Perhaps its nest is near

Lands in the yard
Looking at me
We know each other in our past lives

Perching on the same branch
Calling to each other
Until their voices go hoarse

Can sow
Seeds
Into stones

This morning
Regrettably
I don’t understand it all

It gets more beautiful as I paint it
Suddenly I am afraid
It is turning into a real horse

Its crane painting
When folded
Resembles a heap of ground meat

Not picking them
I watch the red-whiskered bulbul
Nibble a little while singing

An orchid blossom
Emits its scent
To a bush of oxalis

My hair still wet
I lean onto a calla lily
To listen to April’s melody

I look at the sun
Nearing a rainbow
Then vanishing

After it is washed
Water condenses
Into large drops

Succulent and bright red
I can’t decide
Whether to bite from inside or outside

One bite at a time
As sunlight
Reflects bright red on the ceiling

Afterwards
Both the potato and the knife
Are pretty

Until
Tea is one way
I another

A cat misses its prey
The blade of an axe
Gets stuck in a log

A fish
Swims
Close to where I sit

Swarming at sunset
In pairs
They fly through my dream

No more rattling please
On the sky
Stars have sprouted thickly

Poems composed by Mai Van Phan

Mai Văn Phấn
Translated from Vietnamese by Nhat-Lang Le
Edited by Susan Blanshard

Many people
Wait for night to come
Why am I so unconcerned

Sits alone
Singing softly
A vaguely sad melody

New Day

I peel a calendar page
And write
All over the other side

Resurface
Knowing the seasonal wind
Arrived last evening

Night Rain

Not wanting trees to dry
This morning’s sunlight
Is also wet

Sparrows on a tree
And I
Have fallen asleep

A bird flaps its wings
Four or five neighbors
Open their doors to look

Trees full of fruit
While walking I count
My steps

In the rain
The road
Is in twilight

Perennial peanut flowers
Around the temple tower of Po Nagar
Cannot open their eyes yet

A Flower Vendor’s Burden

The flower vendor wipes her sweat
Peonies
Bundled together with tulips

Rainwater
Flowing through beehives
Spills over a brick wall.

Industrial Era

A dragonfly sitting on top of a crane
In ten minutes
Lifts up three different loads of product

The wind
Grazes through
Several times

Expecting their mother
Leaves around the nest
Call her to them

I see young birds
Newly born
So pitiful

Reading a Book

Suddenly confused
I stare
At a road in the night

Everyone is disappointed
So am I
Then speak

Near a Water Fountain

A pair of pigeons
Look at each other
For a very long time

Old men deep in discussions
A sweeping woman respectfully
Invites them to another bench

Meeting an Old Friend

Conversation
Silence
A brook is still flowing steadily

A clump of ivory bamboo twists and turns
An old man passing by
Arms swinging briskly

I stand on my veranda
Waiting for the moon
To slice me the biggest part

Slippery
They dare not look
At people passing by

A prevailing wind
Blows this way
And that way

Keep
Burying each other
Into the ground

Fuchsia Flowers

Hanging down
Cast its halo
Over me

Dropping a bunch of keys
Just that
Changed so many thoughts

A Happy Moment

Is when tearing
A calendar page
Becomes easier

A pigeon flies
Leading the way
For a large cloud

Stepping on a Patch of Sunlight

I hold tight
Until
The yellow no longer moves

A dragonfly departs
A bindweed flower
Keeps waving

Longan Flowers

Cling to a bee’s feet
Which drops pollen
To the ground

A fish
Wiggles its tail
Up the water

My neighbor is away
A window high up
Left open

A photo blurs with moisture
I see my relatives
From another world
