Nếu trong nhà vợ chồng biết nhường nhịn nhau,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có những cuộc cãi vã, li hôn
và những đứa trẻ có mẹ thiếu cha, có cha thiếu mẹ...
Nếu hàng xóm biết tự kiềm chế và tôn trọng nội qui xóm phố,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có những trận chiến bằng miệng và bằng cả chân tay,
những ánh mắt hằn học, đố kị đầu độc mối quan hệ láng giềng...
Nếu đi đường ai cũng nghiêm chỉnh chấp hành luật lệ giao thông,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có những tai nạn đau lòng xảy ra,
để lại những vành khăn trắng trên đầu người thân và những hệ lụy cho xã hội....
Nếu các thầy cô thật sự coi mình là “kĩ sư tâm hồn” mang trọng trách trồng người cho đất nước,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có cảnh bạo lực học đường đang làm các bậc phụ huynh nhức nhối
và những chuyện khuất tất trong bóng tối...
Nếu các thầy thuốc thật sự coi mình là “mẹ hiền” của bệnh nhân,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có những “tai nạn nghề nghiệp” và những cái chết thương tâm,
những cảnh người nhà bệnh nhân xông vào bệnh viện đuổi giết bác sĩ....
Nếu các cơ quan công quyền thật sự coi mình là “đầy tớ nhân dân”như chính họ vẫn thường nói về mình như thế,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có những chuyện “hành dân là chính” làm dư luận bức xúc đã nhiều năm...
Người dân được hưởng đủ quyền tự do, dân chủ....
Nếu các nguyên thủ quốc gia không nuôi tham vọng đối với lãnh thổ tài nguyên của nhau,
sẽ chẳng bao giờ có những cuộc chiến tranh “máu chảy thành sông, xương chất thành núi”...
Cả thế giới được sống trong hòa bình và phát triển.
Ôi, ước gì những chữ “nếu” này không còn là “nếu” nữa !

15. IF
If in the families, husbands and wives had known how to make concessions to one another
There would have never been any quarrel and divorce
As well as children having mother but not father and vice versa...
If neighbourers had known how to dominate their passions and respect the residential quarter’s regulations
There would have never been any verbal battle and fistfight at all
As well as looks of grudge and envy poisoning the neighbourliness...
If on the road eveyone had strictly abided by the traffic law,
There would have never been any heart-rending accident occurrence
Leaving mourning bands on the dead people’s relatives’ heads and bad corollaries to the society...
If the teachers had really considered themselves as “soul engineers” bearing the great responsibility of educating young generations for the country
There would have never been any school violence hurting parents
As well as dubious and tortuous incidents in darkness...
If the physicians had really considered themselves as “virtuous mothers”of their patients,
There would have never been any “professional accident” and heart-breaking deaths
And the scenes of patients’ relatives rushing into hospitals to chase and kill doctors...
If the civil authorities had really considered themselves as “people’s servants” as they often say about themselves like that,
There would have never been any incident “torturing the common people is the main task” irritating the public opinion for years...
And the common people could enjoy all their rights of freedom and democracy...
If the heads of State hadn’t cherished any ambition for one another’s state’s territory or natural resources,
There would have never been any war with “blood running out as rivers and bones piled up as mounts”...
And the whole world could be in peace and development.
Oh, I wish these “ifs”were not “ifs” any longer !
