Sauti
continues that he shall narrate the Mahabharata before Saunaka & his
followers from its very beginning. The naration will not merely please Saunaka
& his followers. It also kindles joy in the heart of Sauti, the speaker, who
tells the story of the Mahabharata.
On
hearing that Janamejaya was engaged in the snake sacrifice, the learned &
wise Vedavyasa reached there. He was the grand faher of Pandavas. His another
name was Dvaipayana.Because he was born in a dvipa or an island. It was an island
on the river Jamuna. He was the son of Prasara & the virgin Satyabati.Parasara
was in turn the son of the great sage Saktri.
Thus
the narrative of the Mahabharata dwels on the episode of the birth of Vedavyasa
the narator.Vedavyasa excelled every one in learning & asceticism. It was
this great sage who was instrumental in bringing about the birth of
Pandu,Dhritharastra & Vidura in order to continue the race of Santanu.
