During the snake sacrifice Janamejaya sat like Indra the king of the gods, surrounded by kings, princes & sages. When Vedavyasa turned up at the site of the sacrifice every one stood up in reverence for Vedavyasa & Vedavyavasa was made to sit on a chair made of gold. Vedavyasa in front of   Janamejaya looked like Vrihaspati in front of Indra. Now after worshipping Vedavyasa Janamejaya wanted to hear from him the heroics of Kauravas & Pandavas that caused the death of countless heroes. Vedavyasa then asked his disciple Vaisampayana seated nearby to narrate the story of Kauravas & Pandavas to the king as he had heard from Vedavyasa himself.
